Our history
It all started out as part of the Age UK and Blackpool FC Community Trust initiative. Walking Football is a slower version of the beautiful game, which is a minimal contact sport with one main difference to standard football – no running! It is a great way to keep fit, learn new skills, have fun and socialise all at the same time.
The first session was launched in December 2013 at Blackpool Sports Centre with the support of the late Age UK Blackpool President, Jimmy Armfield, Ex-England, Blackpool Player and Sports Broadcaster. “I only came to watch but once I was here I couldn’t resist joining in,” said 78-year-old Armfield. “Once a footballer always a footballer”.
A competitive team emerged from those early days and played in various tournaments, we now have various age groups of teams since an increase of numbers that attend our walking football sessions.
In recent times we have won the Football League Trust National Walking Football Cup, the Lancashire League and won the North West Regional finals for the third year in a row as part of the English Football League Trust National Walking Football Tournament amongst many others from all age groups.
